1000 Miles in 2012

At the first of the year I set a goal to run 1,000 miles in 2012.  To some that sounds like a lot, to others that's just an ordinary thing.  For me it's something I had never considered until last year, and wasn't completely confident it was something I could accomplish.  After One Marathon, 4 half marathons, a Red Rock Relay, a few other races and a bunch of running with C and on my own I hit 1000 miles.  I'm pleased to say I finished with a month to spare.  Fortunately I was able to run throughout the year with only minor injuries and almost always enjoyed the journey.  Thanks to everyone who ran with me at different times.  Hope you enjoyed 'Running with Ryan' in 2012.

Thankful 13 5K 2012

Caroline and I debated running the Fleetfeet Turkey Trot as we did last year, or try the Thankful 13 5k at Thanksgiving Point.  Our curiosity of the Thankful 13 won out.  Although it was their first year organizing this race, it went off pretty well.  There was a lengthy uphill stretch and the wind was blowing against us rather swiftly; combine that with it being a bit to cold for comfort and that wasn't the most pleasant stretch, but we still had fun and finished together in 27 minutes.  I debated running the half marathon but decided I didn't want to feel tired all day for Thanksgiving.

Snow Canyon Half Marathon 2012

Caroline and I traveled to St. George last night and I ran the Snow Canyon half marathon this morning.  Somehow I forgot my running bag with my sweatshirt, so I froze for an hour after the bus dropped me off at the start before the the race started.  Other than that it was a enjoyable run.  Beautiful Scenery!  Didn't set a personal best, but ran it in a good time, 1:47:09 (second best).  The last 6 miles weren't down hill as much as  I thought they would be, so it challenged me a bit.  I'm up for doing it again next year.

Mt. Nebo Half Marathon 2012

Mt. Nebo Half marathon

This was hyped as an all down hill fast course and the hype was correct.  I felt good today resulting in a good time.  Once again loved the feeling at the finish line.  It's very rewarding.  Had fun running with Bret and Dave.  Hope to do this one again.

13 Mile August Canyon Run

American Fork canyon has become one of my favorite Saturday routes to run.  The scenery is second to none.  I feel lucky to have such a nice route so close to me.  Early this morning Caroline, Bret and I ran together.  Great company also.

Cowley Day 5k 2012

Caroline and I ran the Cowley Day 5k while in Wyoming.  In high school the week before football season would start I would run out to the tracks and back once or twice in a last minute effort to get ready for practice.  This 5k was the same route, it seemed much easier this time than it used to feel.

Freedom Festival 10k 2012

Caroline and I started the 4th with 5600 other runners at the Freedom Festival 10k in Provo.  Followed this with breakfast at Magleby's with the kids.  Great way to start the celebration.

AF Canyon Half Marathon 2012

Caroline and I, along with many others we know, ran the AF Canyon Half Marathon.  We've been looking forward to this one for a while.  It was a fun morning in a scenic canyon.

Injured Toe!

This may prove to be a minor set back on the running thing.  We'll see how it feels while running in a day or two.  I dropped a 5 gallon bucket of paint off of a pallet on to my toe.

Utah Valley Marathon 2012

10 Thoughts on My First Marathon
1. I assumed I wouldn't get much sleep the night before, but actually slept really well.
2. The Marathon was very well organized, making it a pleasant experience. I was impressed.
3. Gary, Brian and Dave's idea of buying sweats at D.I. that they aren't worried about getting back form the start like is a smart idea.
4. The scenery around Wallsburg and Provo Canyon is beautiful. There was plenty of time to look.
5. I was surprised at how many people, including females, went to the bathroom on the side of the road instead of waiting for the next port-o-potty.
6. Stopping to drink a cup of water at each aid station is a must on a marathon (for me anyway).  My legs began to cramp up at around mile 23.
7. There really is a wall you hit at 20 miles.
8. Who ever decided to give out popsicles at the 22nd mile was a genius.
9. I was teary eyed crossing the finish line.  It was very gratifying and euphoric to finish.  There is truth in the philosophy of the spirit being strong when the physical body is week.
10. I have no desire at this moment to do a marathon again.  Ask me in a couple of weeks.

Memorial Day Run of Remembrance

Caroline, Bret and I started the morning with a Memorial Day 'Run of Remembrance' 5k.  It was Bret's first, and he did well.  We all finished under 29 minutes.  It had been a while since I've ran a 5k and I enjoyed it.  Thanks for running with me Caroline and Bret.
